Volunteering!

Hello, I’m Annika McDonald and I am the new office administrator at Huntingdonshire Cricket Board.

I have been working within cricket for the passed three years, in 2009 I volunteered as a Media assistant at the Oval during the T20 World Cup and the final Ashes test and in 2010 I spent the whole season working at Lord’s Cricket Ground as an Assistant for the Ground Superintendent, the Media Manager and the Pavilion Manager.

Along with my new role I also work as a Broadcast Assistant at BBC Radio Cambridgeshire for the

Peterborough Breakfast show and the Sports team.

Part of my role within HCB will focus on the promotion of volunteers in cricket throughout Huntingdonshire.

Volunteering consists of everyone who gives his or her time in some way to help the game. It includes small gestures, like making teas or website design to more fundamental contributions of course, such as coaching kids’ teams, which may of course include developing your clubs stars of the future. It’s no exaggeration to say that big stars like Andrew Strauss and Jimmy Anderson simply wouldn’t be where they are today without the hard work of volunteers.

One of the ways to get involved is through the vCricket programme

Huntingdonshire Cricket Board in conjunction with the ECB has teamed up with the V national charity to create vCricket. vCricket aims to recognise and reward volunteers within cricket. vCricket offers a reward scheme for 16-25 year olds that have volunteered within their cricket club. There are three milestone in which rewards are distributed; after 25 hours voluntary work you can send off for free ECB Polo shirt, after 50 hours an ECB Hoody and after 100 hours a Limited Edition ECB silver pin badge and a personal letter of recognition from ECB’s head of vCricket.

The vCricket programme has already been a huge success within Huntingdonshire. There are now over 40, 16-25 year old volunteers registered and earning reward for the hours they put in at their clubs.
